As the siren’s call rises, a crisp and lively melody gently wafts to the ear, weaving an atmosphere of tenderness entwined with tension. The new track “Xo sick” by independent musicians shushu and Charity SSB transports listeners into a fictional world they’ve crafted, it’s a gateway to a world of their own making. It’s where echoes of different times converge, blending the bygone days of rap with the contemporary pulse of pop.
This single traces its roots back to an edit shushu crafted four years prior, sampling Ne-Yo’s R&B hit “So Sick,” characterized by the unique naivety and sorrow of the millennium. The vocal part comes from rapper Lil Uzi Vert’s “Xo Tour Llif3,” wrapped in restlessness and heartbreak. Against the backdrop of these two tracks, shushu and Charity have infused their own style into the new single.
Shushu penned the first half of the lyrics during Shanghai’s lockdown in 2022, her voice, a delicate whisper of “Unforgettable,” painted the helplessness and unease of those days. The hazy vocals, processed through Auto-Tune, intensified the sense of bewilderment, while a cascade of staccato drumbeats added urgency, standing in stark contrast to her gentle intonations.
Charity’s involvement brought a more romantic flair to the piece. Together in Manchester, they laid down the current version in a kitchen turned studio, crafting a verse so laid-back it seemed to emerge effortlessly. His freestyle lyrics nudged the song into the realm of love ballads, all while riding the waves of a dancehall beat that was as free as it was spirited. His casual yet profound delivery tempered the song’s inherent sorrow.
You can feel the emotions coursing through their words, their unique take on a love song. With familiar tunes, yet it speaks of clarity and the sting of pain in a way only they can express.
